SOIL TALKER™

The ST-1 Soil Health Tool by Carbon Diagnostics, LLC is the first-ever hand-held, in-field CO2 respiration testing system. Seamlessly integrate technology and nature, allowing the soil microbes to communicate directly with us. With ST-1, experience real-time soil microbial activity, straight from your field.

  • Developed after rigorous comparisons with over 40,000 Haney Soil Health Test samples, the ST-1 not only measures CO2 response but also approximates organic N release for plant-available nitrogen. By taking measurements before and after rainfall, users can estimate nitrogen release as the flourishing microbes utilize both Carbon and Nitrogen for growth.

The technology's brilliance shines in its design. The patent-protected ST-1 tube and sensor system provide unparalleled insights into the intricate dynamics of soil bacteria and fungi in their native environment. As Dr. Rick Haney aptly puts it, "We're taking soil respiration testing right to where the game's played: YOUR field."

    Why Choose ST-1?

    • Insights into Soil Microbial Activity: Track how microbial communities respond to various management practices instantly.
    • Expansion Kits: Customize your ST-1 with an unlimited number of tubes for flexible readings at your convenience.
    • Understanding Soil: As Dr. Haney says, "Water and nutrient cycling are biologically driven. Isn't it time we listen more to what the soil tells us?"
    • Extensive Data Sets: Carbon Diagnostics collaborates with experts, like Lance Gunderson of Regen Ag Lab, to generate comprehensive datasets comparing ST-1 in-field readings with lab-based Haney Health Tests.

The Importance of Soil CO2 Measurements

Microbes are the soul of the soil, adapting to diverse environmental conditions for millions of years. Their structure, adaptability, and function reflect their habitat. Carbon drives the nutrient-microbial recycling system, making carbon measurement integral to soil health.

The ebb and flow of drying and rewetting cycles shape soil microbial activity. It's essential to account for these cycles and the subsequent nutrient release, primarily driven by microbes, to truly understand and improve soil health.

Dr. Rick Haney

An internationally recognized Soil Chemist & Microbiologist, Dr. Rick Haney grew up farming in Custer County, OK. After earning his PhD in soil microbial ecology and chemistry from Texas A&M University, he dedicated over 30 years to soil ecology research. Dr. Haney's immense contributions to the domain of soil health and his innovative testing methods have made him a revered figure in the global scientific community. After his tenure at the USDA-ARS Grassland Soil and Water Research Laboratory, he ventured into consulting, joining forces with Jason R. Snavely to develop the pioneering ST-1 tool. In his free moments, Rick relishes time with his family, indulges in music, bourbon, and his love for woodworking.
